Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday paid heartfelt tributes to Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak on his birth anniversary.

In a post on handle X, Modi remembered Tilak as a “pioneering leader” who played a vital role in India’s freedom movement with “unwavering conviction.” Modi also highlighted Tilak’s emphasis on the power of knowledge and serving others.

Born on July 23, 1856, in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, Tilak was a prominent leader in India’s struggle for independence.

Tilak is famous for his slogan, “Swaraj is my birthright, and I shall have it,” which became a rallying cry for the freedom movement.

He co-founded the New English School in Pune and launched newspapers like Kesari (Marathi) and Mahratta (English) to promote nationalist ideas.

Tilak’s birth anniversary is observed across India to honour his contributions to the freedom struggle.
